Graduate Program Overview

The Daniel J. Evans School of Public Affairs at the University of Washington (UW) is a graduate professional school providing education and research for public service. The School confers the Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree and a PhD degree in public policy and management. The Evans School's program of study prepares highly skilled managers and policy analysts for a wide range of careers in the public and nonprofit sectors. Joint degree programs in international studies, law, forest resources, urban planning, and public health are available. Program options include a Peace Corps Master's International (PCMI) in international nongovernmental organization development and, for traditional second-year students, a certificate in international development policy and management.
The Evans School curriculum integrates public policy analysis and management and gives students the flexibility to specialize in substantive policy fields. The academic program is divided into three major components: the required core curriculum that introduces students to public organization theory, policy analysis, budgeting, microeconomics, and quantitative methods; more advanced study of analysis, ethics, internal agency management, and management of the external agency environment (e.g., media relations); and a specialized study in a chosen gateway (education and social policy, environmental policy, international affairs, urban and regional affairs, nonprofit management, or individualized). The Evans School also offers an Executive Master's Program.
