What is PPIA? 

The Public Policy and International Affairs Program (PPIA) is a not-for-profit organization that has been supporting efforts to increase diversity in graduate studies for public policy, international affairs, and public service for over 40 years. 


PPIA believes that our democracy will be stronger, less polarized, and more trustworthy when we ensure those entering public service are more representative, compassionate, and inclusive of American identities and global experiences.

Junior Summer Institute

The next Junior Summer Institute application cycle opens September 2024. 

Are you an undergrad interested in a career in public service? The PPIA Junior Summer Institute is the perfect place to start!


Each year, PPIA seeks out high-potential undergraduate students from universities across the country to participate in an intensive seven-week Junior Summer Institute before their senior year. 


During the JSI summer program, fellows are equipped with the knowledge and skills they will need to succeed in graduate school and ultimately, in influential roles serving the public good.

Public Service Weekends are free, three-day conferences held across the country each summer and fall. The conferences aim to introduce college students and recent post-grads to the broad range of opportunities available in public service.

Public Service Expo

Our expos and fairs bring together representatives from the nation’s top graduate programs in public policy and international affairs and employers seeking highly qualified individuals who are committed to public service under one roof.


Our 2024 Public Service Expo will be held on Friday, July 12, 2024 in Washington, DC. 

Grad School Consortium

PPIA’s Graduate School Consortium is comprised of over 50 public policy and international affairs programs from across the county. 

These institutions share PPIA’s commitment to increasing diversity and fostering inclusion, access, and belonging in public service. They also support our fellows and scholars in their pursuit of graduate education.

Alumni of the PPIA Junior Summer Institute who apply for admission to member schools are guaranteed  application fee waivers and, if accepted, are guaranteed a minimum, one-time financial award of $5,000 from the school. Many institutions have provided financial assistance well above this level (including 100% tuition scholarships and generous stipend support).

We are proud to announce our current strategic planning process. To strengthen our strategic direction, PPIA has contracted with Aropa Consulting, led by JSI Alumnus Rosalind Zavras. We anticipate completing strategic planning by Summer 2024.

Our alumni are making their mark and effecting change in every sector. Your tax-deductible contribution will help PPIA continue its work through our Junior Summer Institutes, national outreach and education campaigns, and alumni engagement. Your monthly contribution ensures that PPIA is able to continue our important work.
