Global Affairs Starts Here
Gemma King
Master of Arts in Asian Studies, ’26
Georgetown School of Foreign Service
From Washington to Jakarta, students gain the expertise and access that define Indo-Pacific strategy.
Regional Depth, Global Strategy
At Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service, regional study is not theoretical. It is connected directly to the policymakers shaping global affairs. The Master of Arts in Asian Studies combines regional immersion with direct exposure to policymakers shaping global affairs. For Gemma King, that integration defined her graduate experience.
Growing up in Australia, Gemma understood early how regional alliances influence global politics. That perspective guided her toward the Indo-Pacific and ultimately to Georgetown. She sought a program that connected academic rigor with direct exposure to U.S. strategy in action.
Field Experience in Jakarta
Through Georgetown SFS Asia Pacific in Jakarta, Gemma examined Indonesia’s political economy at close range. Her research on critical minerals and Indonesia’s mining sector included travel to Papua, where she studied governance frameworks, environmental considerations, and the intersection of multinational firms and national development priorities.
Field experience strengthened her regional credibility and deepened her analytical perspective.
Georgetown SFS connected regional expertise with real policy decisions happening in Washington.
Gemma King
Policy Access in Washington
Back in Washington, Gemma participated in a seminar led by former U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell. The experience provided firsthand exposure to how Indo-Pacific strategy is formulated and implemented at the highest levels of government.
Engagement with senior policymakers complemented classroom study, reinforcing the connection between theory and practice.
From Classroom to Career
Gemma also interned at the Center for Strategic and International Studies and at Vriens & Partners, a government affairs consulting firm focused on Southeast Asia. These roles allowed her to apply regional expertise to live policy questions while building relationships within Washington’s strategic community.
As she approaches graduation, Gemma is prepared to enter the Indo-Pacific policy space with both regional depth and professional experience.
The MASIA program integrates rigorous academics, overseas immersion, and policy proximity to prepare graduates for careers in government, consulting, research institutions, and international organizations.
